What the cloth does

Fabric and care notes

The fabric field on a listing is one line long and tells you more about how a piece will behave than any of the marketing above it.

Every page here prints the fabric line exactly as we filed it, and leaves the field out where we left it blank. Here is what those words tend to mean once the parcel is open.

Linen

Cool, dry to the touch, creases immediately and permanently until you wash it again. Gets softer every wash for about the first ten. Shrinks a little the first time, mostly in length, and hot drying makes that worse. The best thing you can wear in humid heat and the worst thing you can wear to a job interview.

Cotton and cotton blends

Predictable. Absorbs sweat rather than moving it, so it stays damp longer than a synthetic during exercise but feels better sitting still. Shrinks on the first hot wash, then stops. Most of our sweatshirts are in this group.

Rayon, viscose and modal

All three are made from processed wood pulp and behave similarly: heavy drape, cool hand, very soft. They wrinkle in soft folds instead of sharp creases. They also lose strength when wet, which is why the care line on these pieces says gentle cycle and reshape while damp. Wringing a wet rayon garment out by hand is how it comes back a different shape.

Polyester and spandex blends

The yoga and lounge pieces mostly live here. They hold shape, dry quickly and resist creasing, and they hold odour more than cotton does. Wash cool, skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibre and makes the odour problem worse.

The care line

Where we filled in care instructions they appear on the page. Machine wash cold covers most of what we make. Two habits cover the rest: wash dark colours separately for the first few cycles, and keep the dryer off high for anything with linen or rayon in it.

What the cloth is, counted up

The fabric line from every listing we run, added together. Where we left that field blank, the piece is missing from this table.
